Stories to listen to

2026 is the National Year of Reading, a UK-wide campaign encouraging people of all ages to Go All In on reading and storytelling – in whatever form works for them, including books, audiobooks and audio storytelling.

So this year, Breathe is going all in on stories too.

Series 1: Under the Green Belt by Claire Smith

Episode 1 – The Vanished

Letchworth Garden City is famous for its green spaces, beautiful architecture and pioneering vision. But the story of this place began thousands of years before the Garden City was created.

The Vanished takes us beneath the familiar landscape of modern Letchworth, uncovering a hidden history of Neolithic ceremonial sites, ancient burials, mysterious ritual deposits and the lost medieval settlement of Roddenhanger.

It also explores the darker side of local history, including the disturbing story of witchcraft accusations in Norton, where two local people were accused of witchcraft and executed.

Atmospheric, intriguing and rooted in the history beneath our feet, Under the Green Belt reveals a very different side to one of Britain's most remarkable towns.

Content warning: This programme contains references to death, cremated human remains, the death of children, historical witchcraft accusations and executions. Some listeners may find these subjects upsetting.
